Colman Gibbs Anstey (DY 64)

In addition to biographies of various Anstey individuals who make up this sub-branch, the book contains a plethora of Anstey research and statistics, including an analysis of how the Dyrham Ansteys fit into the pedigree descendent from Hubert de Anesti, the 12th century originator of the ‘Anstey’ surname.

DY 64. Colman Gibbs Anstey: He was born in 1896 in Horfield, Bishopston near Bristol to parents Robert Anstey (DY 48) and Elizabeth Mary Tomkins. He was a patient at the ‘Orthopaedic Hospital Home For Crippled Children‘ in Bristol in 1901 and a pupil at East Harptree Bristol School in the 1911 Census (“partly paralysed” was written on the census next to his name but crossed out). He married Hilda Montague White in 1918 in Bristol and they had children in Bristol: 

  • Margaret R. Anstey (b 31 August 1921, living with parents in 1939);
  • Nigel Alister Gustave Anstey (b June 1927 ” BIRTHS. ANSTEY.—To Mr and Mrs Colman G. Anstey, 126, Gloucester Road. Bristol, a son.” – Nigel was an Anstey Researcher specialising in the early Dyrham Ansteys – see for example DY 1)

By 1921 they were at 15 St Leonard’s Road, Horfield, Bristol. The ‘South Bristol Free Press and Bedminster, Knowle & Brislington Record‘ 17 August 1929 reported “We regret that the name of Mr. Colman G. Anstey was spelt wrongly in the advertisement in our last issue. Mr. Colman G. Anstey, whose address is The Berkeley Studio, 126, Gloucester Road, is making an announcement that will arouse the greatest interest of amateur photographers. It is that the shilling film is here, with eight exposures and is guaranteed

In the 1939 Register he was a general clerk living with his family at 3 Gilda Crescent, Bristol. He died in 1965 in Bristol.

In 1970 “In the estate of MISS SARA KATHERTINE JEFFERY deceased (formerly of Broadfield Bristol) Will any person knowing the present address of COLMAN ANSTEY formerly of 55 Brecknock Road Bristol 4 please communicate with Messrs Chubb Beresford & Wyatt Solicitors 7 Market Place
