Anstey Heroes

Many Ansteys have fought in wars over the past thousand years or so. Indeed the very first Anstey, Hubert, no doubt played his part in the war that was ‘The Anarchy’ during the 1140s and early 1150s (see ‘ANSTEY: Our True Surname Origin and Shared Medieval Ancestry‘ Chapter One). In our first book we also note that medieval Ansteys fought in numerous wars, including:

  • Anglo-French Wars of the 1160s;
  • 1193 – 1199 Anglo-French War;
  • The Third Crusade;
  • The First Barons War;
  • The Second Barons War;
  • The Conquest of Wales;
  • The Second Scottish War of Independence;
  • Hundred Years War with France

However, in most cases we lack details of our medieval Anstey ancestors’ wartime heroics, as their immediate descendants never set up a website to honour and document their deeds and thus they are largely forgotten.

We can rectify this at least in part by documenting the heroics of Ansteys in more recent wars, specifically

Anybody who has researched their Anstey ancestors’ wartime heroics and wishes for their (original) findings to be uploaded to the Anstey story project website, please contact
