Thomas John Anstey, confusingly also known as John Thomas Anstey, a member of the Iddesleigh Ansteys, was born on 13 October 1893 in Iddesleigh to parents William Anstey and Lavinia Emma Woods; he was brother to fellow Anstey Hero Albert Arthur Anstey.

In the 1911 Census he was living with his family at Fursdon Farm, Iddesleigh, working as a ‘farmer’s son’
signed up for service as John Thomas Anstey (certainly him cos of Fursdon Farm) – Royal Marine Artillery 3433
By 1919 he was back living at Fursdon Farm with his brother Walter
