Alfred John Anstey (b 1887)

by Gary. M. Ansteychief researcher of the Anstey story project.

Alfred John Anstey, a member of the Crediton Ansteys (part of the South West Peninsula Anstey pedigree), was born on 28 November 1887 in Hampstead, baptised in Easton, St Gabriel, Gloucestershire on 21 June 1888, to parents John Anstey and Sarah Tyley Tucker. He grew up living at Bolton Road, Hampstead and later 76 Messina Avenue, Hampstead, and by the 1911 Census he was still unmarried, living with his family at 82 Messina Avenue and working as a “minor clerk at London County Council

Alfred’s World War One story is somewhat unclear as we are unable to locate any Service Records. What he do know is that in q3 1915 in Kensington he married Rose Elsie Crook (there were no children of this marriage to our knowledge) and then at around the same time (certainly in 1915) he enlisted for service with the Royal Engineers as a Sapper (Service Numbers: 563031 and T2001).

At the time of his enlistment we know that he was working for the London County Council in their Education Officers Department, part of the Central Administrative Staff, and he was posted to the London Electrical Engineers Anti-Aircraft Corp of the Royal Engineers.

Finally, we know that Alfred entered the France Theatre of War in 1916, spending two years there, and then he was discharged in 1919. For his services, he was awarded the Victory and British War medals.

By the 1921 Census Alfred and Rose were living in Uxbridge and in the 1925 Electoral Register they were residing at Northolt Junction Estate in Ruislip. By the 1939 Register they were living at Larksfield Cottage, Bledlow, Wycombe, where Alfred was working as an Assistant Officer at London County Council.

Alfred died on 28 May 1970 at Moor House Nursing Home, Tilford Road, Hindhead, Surrey – his wife Rose predeceased him on 25 January 1967 at Farnham Hospital Surrey.
