Arthur Richard Anstee (b 1895)

by Gary. M. Ansteychief researcher of the Anstey story project.

Arthur Richard Anstee, sometimes known as Richard, a member of the Potsgrove Anstees, was born on 18 (or 28) March 1895 in Leicester, baptised 14 May 1895 at Leicester, St Mary de Castro, to parents John Anstee and Mary Ann Russell – he was brother to fellow Anstey Heroes John William Anstee, Harry Russell Anstee and Harold Anstee. He grew up in Leicester, living at 20 Hawthorne Street, Leicester in 1901, and he was still there with his family in the 1911 Census, working as a druggist’s assistant. In q1 1915 Arthur married Elsie May Woolman in Leicester – we find no children of this marriage.

We have struggled to piece together details of Arthur’s World War One story as we are unable to locate any Service or Medical Records. What we do know is that he must have volunteered for service very early on in the conflict, probably in late 1914, enlisting (as Richard) with the Leicestershire Regiment as a Private (Service Numbers: 3666 and 200925).

He entered the ‘France’ Theatre of War on 25 June 1915, and the next we hear from him is in the 1918 ‘Absent Voter Lists‘ where he was described as “Anstee Arthur Richard 200925 Pvte 1/4th Leicesters”, registered at 79 Rowan Street, Leicester together with his brothers Harold and Harry.

The only other snippets that we have found are that for his services Arthur was awarded the 1915 Star Medal, as well as the Victory and British War medals; he was demobilised on 24 January 1919; and his name appears on the St. Augustine’s Church ‘Roll Of Honour’ in Leicester.

By 1920 Arthur and Elsie were at 2 Rose Cottages, St Peter’s Lane in Leicester – they were still living there in 1931. By the 1939 Register Arthur and Elsie were living at 13 Estoril Avenue, Wigston where he was a “Heel Furnisher Seat Wharf Finishing Department Own Account“.

Arthur died in 1974 in Leicester, buried on 4 November 1974 at Knighton, St Mary Magdalen in Leicester.
