John Anstee (HH 4)

See ‘Anstey: A Complete History From the Norman Invasion to World War One‘ for much more on the Hemel Hempstead Anstees. In addition to biographies of various Anstey individuals who make up this sub-branch, the book contains a plethora of Anstey research and statistics, including an analysis of how the Hemel Hempstead Anstees fit into the pedigree descendent from Hubert de Anesti, the 12th century originator of the ‘Anstey’ surname.

HH 4. John Anstee:  He was born 28 December 1772, baptised 31 January 1773 in Hemel Hempstead to father William Anstee (HH 3). He married Mary Bates (b 1775) in Ivinghoe in February 1797 when he was described as “of Ivinghoe“. They returned to Hemel Hempstead and had children

  • Henry Anstee (bap 9 Jul 1797 Great Gaddesden in Hemel Hempstead);
  • William Anstee (b 31 Dec 1798 Hemel Hempstead bap 20 Jan 1799);
  • Thomas Anstee (b 20 December 1800 Hemel Hempstead, baptised 11 January 1801);
  • Joseph Anstee (b 1803 Great Gaddesden); and
  • George Anstee (bap 20 May 1810 Little Gaddesden, died an infant).

His wife Mary died in 1810 in Great Gaddesden aged 35, probably due to complications from childbirth.

[Research Note: We are very surprised that we cannot track this family after 1810, given that they had five sons…research continues]
